The Description Meta Tag should provide a short description of a page’s content. If there is no meta description on a page or the description is not related to the page content Google and other search engines might provide an auto-generated description in search engine result pages (SERPs). It is recommended to keep the description short and to the point not to extend over 320 characters. Although Google announced in 2009 that “description” meta tag is not utilized in ranking algorithms, well-written meta description can indirectly benefit SEO by increasing click-through rates and overall traffic.
